Project Loop FAQ
How can I use your music?
You can do lots of things with it. You can put it in your videos, you can edit and mix your own tracks with it and create derivative works. You can even sell it if you want to, because its license allows for commercial use. Although if you do use my music for commercial purposes, I'd really appreciate a donation. Full license details here.
What do I need to do if I use your music?
By terms of the license, you MUST credit me ("Music by Candy Bilyk"or "Royalty Free Music from Project Loop" both do nicely) and place a link to http://www.candacebilyk.com/project-loop wherever you use or distribute the music. For instance, put the link in a video description or credits, content in a blog, or printed on a cd cover or inset. That's it. I probably won't unless you're making a lot of money from it, but if you don't do this I'm allowed to sue you for copyright infringement.
What is Creative Commons, and how does it affect copyright?
Creative Commons is a non-profit which provides licenses allowing original content creators to relinquish some or all of their rights for a given work. In this way, I retain the copyright to the work, but you are allowed to use it. Creative Commons is really cool, you should check them out here.
Which Creative Commons License do you use?
I chose the Attribution license, which appears next to every CC Attribution licensed track as a graphic. The graphic links to a description of what the license means. In the future there may be some tracks under other licenses, but that's the future.
What, exactly, is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution license?
Only the specific audio recording made for Project Loop is licensed under Creative Commons. I retain full copyright for all sheet music, musical ideas, etc. So, for example, you can mix a derivative work using the recording provided from Project Loop, but you cannot make your own recording of the music or write another piece which uses my melodies.
Why do you have links to sheet music?
I've noticed that people sometimes ask for sheet music at other royalty-free audio sites, and they don't usually have any. Since all of my works start as a sheet music file in Sibelius anyway, I thought I'd offer them.
You don't have enough music.
The collection should grow every week, sometimes faster. Eventually it will be so big you'll complain about having too much to sift through to find what you want.
I want a samba/tango/emo song/something that you don't have right now!
Please contact me, I'll let you know how soon I can do it.
Will you write something just for me that no one else can use?
Sure, I love commissions! Please contact me and we'll work out all the details.
Why do you have a "composer" category, with only you in it?
Two reasons: 1) Because eventually I hope to include some improvisations done by friends or family who would like to contribute. 2) Because eventually I'd like to make some royalty-free recordings of compositions in the public domain, and it would be nice to search those by composer.
Why did you make this website?
For many reasons. I got hooked in the YouTube community, and wanted to participate by helping video creators have more royalty-free music to choose from. Underscoring is something I'm very interested in, and this gives me practice. It's also a great way for me to experiment with short character pieces and have them be used and heard instead of sitting dead in a file. From the narcissistic standpoint, I want to get my name and music around and build up an audience, and this is a great way to do so. It's also the main reason why Project Loop is not its own website but a part of my main website.
Where do you get your inspiration?
Carrots. No, seriously - I chew on carrots, and suddenly my head is filled with ideas. They help me concentrate. I guess that means that carrots just allow me access to the ideas... so I don't know where they come from. Sorry.
So, um, do you have good eyesight?
Yes, but I suspect that has more to do with genetics.
